EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration is taken from the "Vermehrte Newe Beschreibung der Muscowitischen und Persianischen Reyse" (Enlarged New Description of the Muscovite and Persian Journey), published in Germany in 1656. The creator of this masterpiece is Adam Olearius (1599-1671), a German merchant, traveler, and writer. Olearius embarked on a journey to Russia and Persia in 1633, and his detailed accounts of his experiences were published in several editions, with this being the most elaborate one. The image depicts the grandeur of the Kremlin, the historic fortified complex at the heart of Moscow, the capital city of the Grand Duchy of Moscow, also known as Muscovy. The Kremlin, with its red brick walls and golden domes, is a symbol of Russian power and Orthodox faith. In the foreground, we see a group of people, possibly merchants or travelers, gathered around a map or a globe, while in the background, we can see the towering spires of the cathedrals and the bustling activity of the city. The intricate copper engraving technique used to create this illustration showcases the fine art and graphic arts skills of the time. The attention to detail, from the ornate patterns on the buildings to the individual features of the people, is truly remarkable. This illustration not only provides a glimpse into the history of Russia during the Middle Ages but also showcases the artistic talent of the time. The image is part of a private collection and is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Europe during the Early Rus period.
