Illustrations of the War in Denmark: [Austrian] artillery baggage-waggons encamped near Kolding, 1864. 'It will be remembered that the town of Kolding is on the frontier of Jutland and Schleswig, and Veile is a short day's inarch to the north of it. The road, for two thirds of this distance, goes straight across a bare, monotonous plain, with scarcely a village upon it. Near Veile it is diversified by hills, ravines, and woods, sloping towards the south-east, where the town stands, at the head of its small fiord or inlet of the sea, in a snug and sheltered situation'. EDITORS COMMENTS
A glimpse into a tumultuous era: 'Austrian artillery baggage-wagons encamped near Kolding' (1864). This striking illustration, published in the Illustrated London News, captures the essence of war-torn Denmark during the Second Schleswig War. The scene depicts Austrian troops stationed near Kolding, a strategic location on Jutland's border with Schleswig-Holstein and Germany. The monotonous plain stretches out before us, punctuated by hills, ravines, and woods that slope towards the south-east where Kolding stands.
The image is a testament to the brutal reality of war: rows upon rows of covered wagons stretch across the landscape, each one bearing its share of artillery supplies and equipment. The horsemen ride proudly atop their steeds, surveying the desolate terrain with an air of detachment. This haunting illustration serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating impact that conflict can have on innocent lives.
Created by an unknown artist in 1864, this print offers a unique window into Denmark's tumultuous past and its struggles against foreign occupation. It is a powerful artifact that transcends time, speaking to us today about the enduring human cost of war.
