Imperial Head-quarters at the Camp at Chalons, [France] - from a drawing by M. Beauce, 1860. The first point of attraction to visitors to the Camp is that part known as the Quartier Imperial...It is situated about a mile from the village of Grand-Mourmelon, and comprises a series of light constructions and chalets gracefully arranged. The principal pavilion, in the centre, is the habitation of the Emperor; that on the right is the Imperial salle-a-manger [dining room]. The pavilion on the left is the Council Chamber, immediately after which comes the dwelling of the Marshal commanding the troops, at present Marshal M'Mahon. The two smaller pavilions behind...are for the Imperial staff officers'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, hailing from the mid-19th century, showcases the Imperial Headquarters at the Camp at Chalons in France, as depicted in a drawing by M. Beaucé in 1860. The first point of interest for visitors to this historic site is the Quartier Imperial, situated approximately a mile from the village of Grand-Mourmelon. The Quartier Imperial is a charming assemblage of light constructions and chalets, gracefully arranged. At the center stands the principal pavilion, which served as the residence of the Emperor. To the right is the Imperial salle-a-manger, or dining room. The pavilion on the left was the Council Chamber, and the dwelling to its immediate left was the residence of the Marshal commanding the troops, at that time Marshal M'Mahon. Two smaller pavilions behind complete the ensemble, providing accommodations for the Imperial staff officers. The scene unfolds with a sense of grandeur and order, as soldiers go about their duties, horses and riders stand at the ready, and onlookers observe the spectacle. The image, reminiscent of an engraving, transports us back in time to an era of military might and elegance. The Camp at Chalons, with its rich history and picturesque surroundings, continues to be a popular tourist attraction and a testament to the enduring allure of the past.
