Improved London Street Architecture: No. 184, Strand, 1856. Creator: Unknown

Improved London Street Architecture: No. 184, Strand, 1856. The structure lately erected, from the designs of Mr. H. R. Abraham, occupies the site of...old Arundel House...The names W. H. Smith and Son appear on the literary refreshment-stalls at most of the principal railway stations...but this branch of their business...form[s] but an unimportant branch of the trade carried on by the firm. The building may be regarded as a sort of newspaper clearing-house...Messrs. Smith and Son do not act as the arms and legs of the other London agents with regard to the evening or weekly papers, as the same degree of exertion is not required to ensure their dispatch by post or railway as with the morning papers; but the requisitions of their country correspondents make their office a busy scene in the afternoons, particularly on Fridays, when the Illustrated London News, and others of the weekly papers, are issued for dispatch to the country'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Improved London Street Architecture: No. 184, Strand, 1856," showcases a striking new building located at 184 Strand in London. Designed by the renowned architect, Mr. H.R. Abraham, this structure replaced the old Arundel House. The building's facade exudes an air of modernity and sophistication, with its grand arches, intricate details, and elegant windows. The photograph offers a glimpse into the bustling activity of the Strand area in the mid-19th century. One of the most notable businesses occupying the ground floor is that of W.H. Smith and Son. While they are well-known for their literary refreshment stalls at major railway stations, this branch of their business forms only a minor part of their extensive operations. Instead, this building functions as a hub for the distribution of newspapers. The Illustrated London News and other weekly publications are dispatched from this office to various parts of the country. The afternoons, particularly on Fridays, are particularly busy times as the weekly papers are prepared for distribution. The scene inside the office would have been a flurry of activity, with correspondents sending in their reports and the papers being readied for dispatch. The photograph provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the world of newspaper distribution in Victorian London. The building's grandeur and the hive of activity within it stand as a testament to the importance of news and information in the daily lives of Londoners during this period.
