Inscription in Latin by Philip Howard, Earl of Arundel, 1587 (1803)
Inscription in Latin by Philip Howard, Earl of Arundel, 1587 (1803). Copied from the wall of the Beauchamp Tower, Tower of London. Howard (1557-1595) became Catholic during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. He spent ten years in the Tower of London, although charges of high treason were never proved. He asked the Queen, as he lay dying of dysentery, to allow him to see his wife, and his baby son who had never seen. The Queen told him that if he would return to Protestantism his request would be granted. Howard refused. He was acclaimed as a Catholic Martyr and was canonised by Pope Paul VI in 1970

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the inscription in Latin by Philip Howard, Earl of Arundel, dating back to 1587. The photograph showcases a piece of history copied from the wall of the Beauchamp Tower within the iconic Tower of London. Philip Howard, an influential figure during his time, made a significant decision to convert to Catholicism amidst Queen Elizabeth I's reign. As a consequence, he endured ten long years imprisoned in the Tower of London on charges that were never proven as high treason. The poignant story behind this inscription unfolds as we learn about Howard's plea to see his wife and baby son for one last time while lying on his deathbed due to dysentery. In a heartbreaking turn of events, Queen Elizabeth I offered him this opportunity only if he renounced his newly embraced faith and returned to Protestantism. However, displaying unwavering devotion and loyalty towards Catholicism until his final breath, Howard refused her proposition. Philip Howard became renowned as a Catholic Martyr following his tragic demise and was later canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1970. This image not only serves as a visual representation but also encapsulates the profound religious convictions and sacrifices made during this tumultuous period in English history. Displayed against an impressive backdrop featuring elements such as fortifications and architectural details typical of Tudor-era England, this print transports us back through time into an era filled with religious turmoil and political intrigue.
