Interior of the New Greek Church London Wall, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Interior of the New Greek Church London Wall, 1850. The interior...is peculiar, being very lofty...the ceiling is arched, paneled...the spandrils being ornamented with enriched paneling. On the northern and southern sides are galleries supported on arches, highly decorated, springing from pillars having extremely bold and effective capitals, the fronts of the galleries containing panels filled with elaborately-worked flower ornaments...The altar-screen is divided into a centre and two wings; the central portion projects, and has an arched doorway, between pilasters...on either hand, pictures are in sunken panels, and above the architrave...are pilasters and panels corresponding in number to those in the story below'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1850, showcases the breathtaking interior of the New Greek Church on London Wall. The interior of this historic place of worship is unique and impressive, with its high ceilings, intricate paneling, and ornate decorative elements. The ceiling is arched and paneled, with enriched paneling adorning the spandrils. Galleries run along the northern and southern sides, supported by arches and pillars with bold and effective capitals. The fronts of the galleries are filled with elaborately-worked flower ornaments. The altar-screen is a central feature, divided into a centre and two wings. The central portion projects, with an arched doorway between pilasters. Sunken panels on either side of the architrave hold pictures, while pilasters and panels above correspond in number to those below. The altar area exudes an aura of tranquility and spirituality, transporting us back in time to the Victorian era. This photograph was published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, providing a glimpse into the architectural and religious history of Britain during the 19th century. The New Greek Church, a testament to the rich cultural diversity of London, continues to be an important part of the city's religious landscape.
