EDITORS COMMENTS
Interior of a Stable, n.d. Artist: Philip Wouverman (1619-1668) Description: This black and white pen and ink drawing with brush and black and gray wash heightened with white gouache over graphite on cream board, by the Dutch artist Philip Wouverman, depicts an interior scene of a stable filled with horses and boys. The horses, with their powerful forms and expressive eyes, are shown in various stages of preparation for use. Some are being groomed, while others are tethered and waiting their turn. Boys of different ages are present, some working and others observing the scene. The stable, with its low, arched doorway and rough-hewn walls, is a testament to the rustic charm of rural life in the Baroque era. The drawing's intricate details and masterful use of light and shadow create a sense of depth and realism, transporting the viewer into the bustling world of a 17th-century stable. Background: Philip Wouverman, also known as Philips Pauwelsz Wouwerman, was a Dutch painter and draftsman, active during the Baroque era. He is best known for his depictions of horses and hunting scenes. This drawing is a rare example of his work in the medium of pen and ink, and demonstrates his exceptional skill in capturing the essence of his subjects with precision and detail. The drawing is part of the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, and is a valuable addition to the institution's rich heritage of Dutch and European art.
