The International Exhibition: colossal plaster statue of Cromwell, by John Bell, 1862. The International Exhibition: colossal plaster statue of Cromwell, by John Bell, 1862. When sitting to Lely it is related that Cromwell said (we quote from memory), "How, Mr. Lely, you will be good enough to observe that there are a number of roughnesses, warts, pimples, and such like on my face; these you will all copy to the life, or - I shall not pay you one penny." Mr. Bell has made a very conscientious use of his materials, and we are glad that his fine colossal statue of one of the most extraordinary men in our own or any other history occupies so conspicuous a position in our great cosmical exhibition. The attitude of the statue is peculiarly suggestive. The gesture is that of almost defiant self-reliance, taking a standing, as it were, upon the sacred volume, and the trusty blade (the "sword of the Lord and of Gideon, " as his followers would say), both of which he equally clasps to his bosom'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the colossal plaster statue of Oliver Cromwell, created by renowned Scottish sculptor John Bell in 1862 for The International Exhibition in London. The statue, which stands proudly in the image, is a testament to Bell's exceptional artistic skills and his ability to capture the essence of one of the most intriguing figures in history. Cromwell, a prominent English political and military leader, was known for his defiant and self-reliant nature. The statue's pose reflects this, with Cromwell standing tall and clutching both a sacred volume and his trusted sword to his chest. The attitude exudes a sense of confidence and determination, making it a fitting representation of the man who led the English Commonwealth from 1653 to 1658. The story goes that when Cromwell sat for his portrait by Sir Peter Lely, he instructed the artist to include every imperfection on his face, threatening not to pay if they were not accurately depicted. Bell, in creating this statue, appears to have taken this request to heart, meticulously capturing every detail of Cromwell's visage. The International Exhibition, held in 1862, was a significant cultural event in London, showcasing the latest advancements in art, industry, and technology from around the world. Bell's statue of Cromwell was a highlight of the exhibition, drawing admiration from visitors for its remarkable size and intricate detail. Today, this photograph serves as a reminder of the exhibition and the enduring legacy of John Bell's masterful creation.
