International Group in Our House, 1926. Creator: Unknown
International Group in Our House, 1926. The "Kuzbass" autonomous industrial colony was created in 1921. It was organized by American workers, who took on the obligation of inviting from the United States and Western Europe some eight thousand skilled workers and specialists to industrialize the Kuzbass. The Soviet government turned over to the colonists a number of Kemerovo mine shafts and an unfinished coking plant. To recruit volunteers to work in Siberia, a "Kuzbass Bureau" was opened in the middle of New York City, and an information bulletin began to be published in the United States. Between January 1922 and December 1923, however, only 566 persons arrived for work in the Kuzbass. The colonists included emigrants from America, Canada, the Netherlands, France, Australia, Jamaica, Indonesia, and other countries as well. Kemerovo Oblast Museum of Regional History and Folklife

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the International Group in Our House in 1926, a moment frozen in time that tells a fascinating story of collaboration and industrialization. The "Kuzbass" autonomous industrial colony was established by American workers who invited skilled individuals from the United States and Western Europe to help develop the Kuzbass region in Siberia. Despite efforts to recruit volunteers through a bureau in New York City, only a fraction of the intended workforce arrived between 1922 and 1923.
The diverse group of colonists featured in this image includes emigrants from various countries such as America, Canada, France, Australia, Jamaica, Indonesia, and more. Their shared goal of industrializing Kemerovo mine shafts and coking plant demonstrates unity amidst cultural differences.
As we gaze upon this black and white portrait filled with men and women gathered inside their new home away from home, we are reminded of the challenges they faced together as pioneers in a foreign land. This historical snapshot serves as a testament to their resilience and determination to build a better future for themselves and their adopted community.
