EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 18th century Investiture Certificate, dated June 5, 1717, marks the entry of Sister Maria Theresa Baglioni into the Augustinian Order in Italy. The certificate is a stunning example of Baroque art, created using black chalk, opaque and translucent water-based paint, and metallic paint on parchment. At the center of the certificate, Christ Jesus, with a serene expression, extends his right hand in blessing, while the infant Jesus rests on his left arm. Surrounding them are cherubs and angels, symbolizing purity, innocence, and the divine presence. The Madonna and Child are depicted on the left, with the infant reaching out towards his mother in a gesture of love and affection. The intricate floral design that frames the central image is a common motif in Baroque art, representing the beauty and abundance of nature, as well as the idea of the earthly world being infused with the divine. The certificate is further adorned with elegant lettering, which records the details of Sister Maria Theresa's investiture. This magnificent artwork, now housed in the Art Institute of Chicago, is a testament to the rich artistic and cultural heritage of Italy during the 18th century. It invites us to reflect on the enduring power of faith and the beauty of the artistic traditions that have shaped our world.
