EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking engraving, titled "Iphis," is a beautiful example of 18th century art from the collection complete des oeuvres de Jean-Jacques Rousseau, published in London between 1774 and 1783. The image was created by the renowned French engraver Nicolas de Launay, who expertly captured the essence of the Greek mythological tale. Iphis, depicted in this print, is a young man who was raised as a girl due to a prophecy that stated his mother would only bear a child if she gave birth to a girl. When Iphphis grew up, he fell in love with Ianthe, a beautiful shepherdess. Fearing the social repercussions of their union, Iphis prayed to the gods to be transformed into a woman so he could marry Ianthe. The gods granted his wish, but later, when Iphis' true gender was revealed, Ianthe was horrified and rejected him. Desperate and heartbroken, Iphis begged the gods to change him back into a man. Once again, they granted his wish, but this time, Iphis was transformed back into a man with a woman's memory, allowing him to understand the depth of Ianthe's feelings and ultimately win her love. This print, with its intricate details and nuanced shading, showcases Iphis in a moment of deep contemplation, holding a spear and dressed in military attire, perhaps reflecting on his past or contemplating his future. The image is a poignant reminder of the power of love and the complexities of human emotions, themes that resonated deeply with the literary and artistic communities of the 18th century. Today, this rare and exquisite print is housed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, where it continues to inspire and captivate visitors from around the world.
