EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of Italian Renaissance polychrome ceramics, dating back to 1898. The creator of these exquisite pieces remains unknown, adding an air of mystery and intrigue to their beauty. The photograph captures various examples of painted faience, with figures 1,6,9,11,12,13,14 and 15 displayed as wainscot-plates on the staircase-walls of house Nr. 26 in Via Luccoli at Genoa. Figures 2,3 , 4 , 5 , 7 , 8 and10 are from the same house but located at Via S. Matteo ibid. The floor-plates depicted in figures16 and17 originate from San Petronio at Bologna. Notably renowned for their tile-floors and wainscot-plates was the school of Della Robbia which achieved great fame during this period; hence such plate-mosaics are often referred to as "Robbian ware". This particular image is Plate46 from "The Historic Styles of Ornament", translated from German by H. Dolmetsch. The lithograph provides a glimpse into the interior design aesthetics prevalent during the Italian Renaissance era. It showcases intricate patterns inspired by nature's floral motifs combined with geometric shapes that create a harmonious symmetrical composition. These decorative ceramic tiles were used extensively for flooring and wall coverings inside grand residences. Through this print collector's treasure trove captured in vibrant colors through chromolithography technique we can appreciate the artistry behind these nineteenth-century ceramics that have stood the test of time.
