EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing artwork by Dutch artist Samuel van Hoogstraten, created between 1647 and 1678, is a double-sided print featuring two distinct scenes. On the recto side, we find the biblical story of Jacob and Esau, depicted in a dynamic and intimate scene. Jacob, with a serious expression, reaches out to touch the fur collar of Esau, who is seated before him, seemingly unaware of his father's touch. The birthright is at stake in this moment, as Esau's older birthright is about to be transferred to Jacob in exchange for a bowl of stew. The rich colors and detailed rendering of the textured fabrics and foliage add depth and texture to the scene. On the verso, we find a tranquil and enigmatic portrait of a young woman asleep. Her head is resting on a tree trunk, surrounded by a lush and verdant landscape. The delicate pen and ink drawing, with brown wash, captures the intricacies of the woman's features and the subtle play of light and shadow. The use of sepia tones adds a sense of timelessness to the image. This unique and thought-provoking artwork, a testament to the artistic prowess of the Dutch Golden Age, is now part of the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. The intriguing juxtaposition of the biblical narrative and the serene portrait invites viewers to ponder the themes of heritage, nature, and the passage of time.
