"This stunningly detailed pencil drawing by Dutch artist Jan Brandes, created in 1785, captures the intricate features of a male Javan quail in a side view. The Javan quail, also known as the blue quail, is a small ground-dwelling bird native to the Indonesian island of Java and Southeast Asia. The quail is depicted in lifelike detail, with its distinctive blue-grey plumage, brown speckled neck, and red eyes. The drawing is part of Brandes' sketchbook, now housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The artist meticulously recorded his observations of the natural world, documenting the flora and fauna of the Low Countries and his travels in Asia. In this drawing, Brandes not only captures the physical appearance of the Javan quail but also includes an inscription describing the bird's distinctive whistling sound. The inscription, written in elegant handwriting, reads, "Javan quail.
