John Gilpins wine bottles explode, 1878, (c1918). Creator: Randolph Caldecott

John Gilpins wine bottles explode, 1878, (c1918). Before setting out on his journey, Gilpin had attached bottles of wine to his belt. John Gilpin was the subject of a comic ballad of 1782 by William Cowper entitled " The Diverting History of John Gilpin". The ballad, based on real-life character, describes how, on a journey to Edmonton (north in London), Gilpin, a draper, became separated from his wife and children after losing control of his horse, and ended up in the town of Ware, ten miles away from his intended destination. From " The Diverting History of John Gilpin", by William Cowper. [Frederick Warne and Co. London & New York, c1918]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the chaotic moment when John Gilpin's wine bottles explode during his ill-fated journey in 1878. Created by Randolph Caldecott around 1918, this image is based on William Cowper's comic ballad "The Diverting History of John Gilpin". In the ballad, Gilpin, a draper from England, finds himself separated from his family after losing control of his horse on the way to Edmonton. In this scene, we see Gilpin galloping through the countryside with bottles of wine attached to his belt. The explosion of these bottles symbolizes both the literal chaos that ensues and metaphorically represents the panic and alarm that befalls him. As an Englishman in the eighteenth century, alcohol was a common part of daily life for many people. Randolph Caldecott skillfully captures the humor and absurdity of this situation through his monochrome depiction. The image highlights not only Gilpin's out-of-control ride but also showcases British country scenery as he races towards Ware instead of reaching his intended destination. This print serves as a reminder of both historical events and literary works that have entertained generations over time. It offers us a glimpse into an amusing episode from centuries past while showcasing Caldecott's artistic talent in bringing Cowper's words to life visually.
