Kali, 900s-1000s. Creator: Unknown

Kali, 900s-1000s. The female aspect of Shiva, the goddess Parvati, has her own cycle of myths, and she herself emanates into different forms. Some branches of Hinduism consider the goddess to be the supreme creator divinity herself, who generated all the other gods, including Shiva. This bronze sculpture could have been affiliated with either branch. Kali is the wrathful form of the goddess generated in the midst of a battle with a demon that the gods failed to conquer. Kali was to drink his blood before any drop fell to ground, or else a new demon would instantly be generated. The demons are metaphors for human vices, such as egotistic pride and arrogance

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a bronze sculpture of Kali, dating back to the 900s-1000s. Created by an unknown artist during the Chola period in South India, this artwork represents the powerful female aspect of Shiva and Parvati. Kali herself is believed to be the supreme creator divinity in some branches of Hinduism, responsible for generating all other gods. The sculpture depicts Kali in her wrathful form, born out of a fierce battle with a demon that even the gods could not defeat. Legend has it that she had to drink every drop of his blood before it touched the ground; otherwise, another demon would instantly emerge. Symbolically, these demons represent human vices like egotistic pride and arrogance. As we admire this remarkable piece at The Cleveland Museum of Art, we are reminded of the rich mythology and diverse beliefs within Hinduism. The intricate details on this bronze sculpture speak volumes about its craftsmanship and cultural significance. Heritage Art/Heritage Images beautifully captures this ancient artwork through their expert photography skills. This print serves as a window into Tamil Nadu's artistic heritage and invites us to delve deeper into Indian mythology and spirituality.
