EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled 'The King of Denmark dining on board the "Cygnus", 1854', is a testament to an historic moment in international relations and railway development. The image, created by renowned photographer T.H. Wilson, depicts King Frederick VII of Denmark in the elegant saloon of the North of Europe Steam Navigation Company's vessel, the "Cygnus". The occasion marks the opening of the British-built Royal Danish Railway, and the King is joined by distinguished guests, including Samuel Morton Peto, a partner of the firm of Peto, Brassey, and Betts, and engineer George Parker Bidder. The scene is set with an air of grandeur and camaraderie. King Frederick, a fine-looking man with an imposing mien and soldierly bearing, is seen in the midst of dining, surrounded by his railway hosts and guests. The entire company, a mix of English and Danish, numbers thirty-six individuals, which was the maximum capacity of the Cygnus' saloon. The moment is immortalized in this photograph as the guests raise a toast to the King's health, with Peto expressing gratitude for the monarch's support of the railway project since its inception. The successful opening of the Royal Danish Railway marked a significant milestone in the development of international railway networks and the strengthening of diplomatic ties between Denmark and Britain.
