EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to Britain in 1930, where former king Manuel II of Portugal is seen mingling with a group of talented tennis players. The occasion was Lady Wavertree's tenth charity tennis party, organized with great enthusiasm and grace. Among the notable names captured in this image are Cochet, Joan Lycett, Susan Palfrey, Betty Nuthall, Eileen Bennett Fearnley Whittingstall, Ermyntrude Harvey, Elizabeth Ryan, Peggy Wood, and Prenn. Formerly known as His Majesty King Manuel II (1889-1932), he holds a significant place in Portuguese history as the last monarch before the country underwent a republican revolution in October 1910. Forced into exile following the overthrow of the monarchy, Manuel found solace and refuge in Britain. This photograph not only showcases an intriguing mix of individuals but also offers us a glimpse into an era marked by elegance and sporting prowess. The presence of exiled royalty among these accomplished athletes adds an air of regality to the scene. It serves as a reminder that even amidst political turmoil and personal displacement, life goes on – friendships are formed through shared passions such as tennis. Preserved for posterity from "The Pageant of the Century" by Odhams Press Ltd. , this snapshot captures both historical significance and timeless beauty. As we admire this group portrait frozen in time against a backdrop of summer sunshine and camaraderie on the court, we can't help but appreciate how sport has always had the power to unite people across borders and backgrounds.
