Kisber (Winner of the Derby); Enguerrande and Camelia (Runners of the Dead-Heat for the Oaks), 1876. Creator: Unknown
Kisber (Winner of the Derby); Enguerrande and Camelia (Runners of the Dead-Heat for the Oaks), 1876....the greatest racing prize of the year has fallen to a Hungarian, and we can only console ourselves with the reflection that the pedigree of both Epsom heroes is purely English. Kisber, better known as the Mineral colt, is by Buccaneer from Mineral...Kisber was bred at one of the three great Imperial stud farms of Austro-Hungary, from which he takes his name, and was purchased as a yearling for £500 by Mr. A. Baltazzi...Kisber was trained by
J. Hayhoe, and ridden by C. Maidment...[He] stands 15 hands 3 in...He has a somewhat plain head, with a strong and very muscular neck running into a splendid pair of shoulders. His back and loins are enormously strong and muscular, and he is altogether, one of the most powerful three-year-olds ever seen'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
"In this photograph from 1876, the thrill of the race is palpable as Kisber, the Hungarian Derby winner, is led triumphantly before the adoring crowd. Flanking him are Enguerrande and Camelia, the dead-heat runners-up in the Oaks, their noble forms a testament to the intense competition that unfolded on the racetrack. The greatest racing prize of the year had unexpectedly fallen to a Hungarian contender, but the English could take solace in the knowledge that both Epsom heroes boasted purely English pedigrees. Kisber, also known as the Mineral colt, was sired by Buccaneer from the mare Mineral. Bred at one of the three great Imperial stud farms of Austro-Hungary, Kisber was purchased as a yearling for £500 by Mr. A. Baltazzi. The colt was then trained by J. Hayhoe and ridden by C. Maidment. Standing at an impressive 15 hands 3 inches, Kisber was a force to be reckoned with, boasting a strong and muscular neck, splendid pair of shoulders, and an enormously powerful back and loins. With a somewhat plain head, Kisber's striking physique belied his true strength and agility, making him one of the most formidable three-year-olds ever seen on the racetrack." This photograph, taken from the pages of the "Illustrated London News" in 1876, captures the excitement and allure of horse racing during an era when the sport captured the imagination of the world. The image of these magnificent horses and their determined riders remains a timeless reminder of the thrill of competition and the enduring power of the human-animal bond.
