Krishna Kills Aghasura, 1675-1700. Creator: Unknown
Krishna Kills Aghasura, 1675-1700. One of the many demons the Hindu god Krishna defeats during his childhood and youth is Aghasura, who assumes the form of an enormous serpent. With Aghasura's open mouth stretching from the earth to the clouds, the cowherds of Krishna's village mistake him for a mountain cave, and enter with their cattle. Krishna, recognising Aghasura for the demon he is, follows them in, then increases his own size, choking the creature and bursting through its skull. Here, the yellow-robed, blue-skinned Krishna is depicted twice: first entering the serpent's mouth, then victoriously rising from its head. Above, gods and celestial beings celebrate Krishna's victory

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 17th century print depicts the Hindu god Krishna in the act of defeating the demon Aghasura. Aghasura, appearing as an enormous serpent with its open mouth stretching from the earth to the clouds, is mistaken by the cowherds of Krishna's village for a mountain cave. Unsuspecting, they enter with their cattle. Krishna, recognizing the demon for what it is, follows them into the serpent's mouth, increasing his own size to choke the creature and burst through its skull. The image captures Krishna twice: first, as he enters the serpent's mouth, and second, victoriously rising from its head. Above, celestial beings and gods celebrate Krishna's triumph. Krishna is depicted in his traditional yellow robes and blue skin, a symbol of his divine nature. This artwork showcases the rich heritage of Hinduism and the intricate details of Indian art during the 17th century. The use of opaque watercolor on paper adds depth and texture to the image, bringing the scene to life. The serene expressions of the celestial beings and the dynamic poses of Krishna and Aghasura add to the overall beauty and significance of the print. The scene also carries a deeper meaning, symbolizing Krishna's role as a protector and rescuer of his people. The cattle represent the livestock and agriculture that were essential to the rural communities of India during this time, highlighting the importance of farming and the role it played in their lives. This print is a testament to the enduring legacy of Hindu art and the rich cultural heritage it represents. It is a reminder of the intricate stories and symbolism that have shaped the world's religions and continue to inspire and captivate us today.
