Krishnas Longing for Radha, from the Gita Govinda of Jayadeva, c. 1820-1825. Creator: Unknown
Krishnas Longing for Radha, from the Gita Govinda of Jayadeva, c. 1820-1825. In the lush forests on the banks of Indias Yamuna River, the youthful god Krishna waits to rendezvous with his beloved Radha. The artist has rendered his impatience by showing seven Krishnas, in various attitudes of anxious waiting, as though seeing him over a period of time. Meanwhile Radha, dressed in yellow at top right, confers seemingly endlessly with her confidante, as she tries to decide whether she should meet Krishna for the illicit tryst--she is already married and Krishna is prone to flirting with other girls. This scene is a metaphor for how god waits for us to come to him, while the human devotee frets about the bonds of social norms

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Krishna's Longing for Radha" we are transported to the enchanting forests on the banks of India's Yamuna River. The scene depicts the youthful deity Krishna eagerly awaiting a clandestine meeting with his beloved Radha, while she deliberates over their forbidden tryst. The artist skillfully portrays Krishna's impatience by presenting seven different depictions of him, each captured in various postures of anxious waiting. This technique suggests that time passes slowly for the lovestruck god as he yearns for his beloved. Meanwhile, Radha is shown dressed in vibrant yellow at the top right corner, engaged in an endless conversation with her confidante. Her hesitation stems from being already married and Krishna's notorious flirtatious nature towards other girls. This poignant moment serves as a metaphor for how God patiently waits for us to seek Him out, even as human devotees fret about societal norms and obligations. Rendered using gum tempera and gold on paper, this exquisite painting hails from Himachal Pradesh in India and belongs to the Pahari Kingdom of Kangra during its heyday. Preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art collection, this artwork showcases not only the artistic prowess but also delves into timeless themes of love, longing, and devotion that resonate across cultures and generations.
