La Mise au Tombeau - The Unknown Soldier's Final Journey from the Arc de Triomphe, Paris, 1921
EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a poignant moment in French history as the Unknown Soldier's coffin is carried from the Arc de Triomphe to his final resting place. The image is taken from "L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 2" published by L'Illustration in Paris in 1924. The Unknown Soldier had been lying in state at the Arc de Triomphe since 11 November 1920, where he had been transferred after being chosen from four unknown soldiers brought back from the battlefields of World War I. On 27 January 1921, the solemn procession began to transport his coffin to its permanent tomb beneath a lateral vault, facing the Avenue Kleber. The image captures the gravity of the moment as the men in uniform carry the coffin, their faces serious and determined. The Arc de Triomphe, a symbol of victory and commemoration, stands tall in the background, its grandeur contrasting with the solemnity of the scene. The Unknown Soldier's journey from the Arc de Triomphe to his final resting place was a powerful symbol of the sacrifice and loss experienced during the First World War. The tomb of the Unknown Soldier remains a significant memorial in Paris, a reminder of the sacrifices made by the men and women who gave their lives for their country during the war. The simple inscription on the tomb, "Ici repose un soldat francais mort pour la Patrie -- 1914-1918," speaks volumes about the enduring impact of the war on France and the world.
