EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph from 1914, four prominent Mexican figures are captured in a formal setting. From left to right, we see Rafael Zubiran, Jose Urquide, L.A. Peredo, and Jose Vasconcelos Calderon. Jose Vasconcelos Calderon (1882-1919) was a prolific writer, philosopher, and politician. He served as the Mexican Minister of Public Instruction and Fine Arts from 1913 to 1915, and later became the Secretary of Foreign Relations in 1917. Rafael Zubiran Capmany (1875-1946) was a lawyer and politician who acted as the Mexican Minister of the Interior during the same period as Vasconcelos. He later served as the Mexican Ambassador to the United States from 1922 to 1924. L.A. Peredo, whose full name is Luis Antonio de Peredo y Montes de Oca, is less well-known but no less significant. He was a Mexican diplomat and politician who served as the Mexican Consul General in New Orleans from 1913 to 1915. The four men are dressed in formal attire, with Vasconcelos and Peredo wearing straw boaters and Urquide and Zubiran donning fedoras. The photograph was taken by the renowned American photography studio Harris & Ewing, which was founded by George H. Harris, George W. Harris, and Martha Ewing Kuntze in 1896. The studio was known for its high-quality glass negatives and produced many iconic images of the early 20th century. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, capturing the essence of a pivotal moment in Mexican history and showcasing the stylish fashion of the time. It is a valuable addition to any collection of historical images, offering insights into the lives and careers of these influential Mexican figures.
