Landing of the Prince of Wales at Colombo: the Governor introducing Cinghalese... 1876. Creator: Unknown

Landing of the Prince of Wales at Colombo: the Governor introducing Cinghalese chiefs to the Prince [of Wales], from a sketch by one of our special artists, 1876. The Governor (the Right Hon. W. H. Gregory) presented the Executive and Legislative Councils, [some of the native chiefs] and the principal gentlemen...The Cinghalese men, almost without exception, wear the native costume...consists of a petticoat...and a sort of jacket, generally black. They wear their hair long, and tied in a knot like women's, and always wear a large comb, either stuck upright in the knob of hair, or (and this is the more general fashion) they wear a long comb extending right over the head and coming down behind the ears...The effect of all this is, of course, to give them a singularly feminine aspect, which is increased by the soft and gentle expression of face and features'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Landing of the Prince of Wales at Colombo: the Governor introducing Cinghalese chiefs to the Prince [of Wales]," dates back to 1876. The image, created by an unknown artist, captures a significant moment in the colonial history of Sri Lanka as the Governor, Sir William Henry Gregory, welcomes the Prince of Wales to the port city of Colombo. The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, is seen standing on the deck of a ship, surrounded by a group of Cinghalese chiefs, who are being introduced to him by the Governor. The Cinghalese men, dressed in their native attire, are a striking contrast to the European dignitaries. Their traditional costume, consisting of a petticoat and a jacket, gives them a distinctively feminine appearance, further accentuated by their long hair tied in knots and large combs adorning their heads. The description from the "Illustrated London News" of 1876, which accompanied the original sketch, notes that the Cinghalese men's attire and hairstyle, along with their soft and gentle facial features, add to their feminine appearance. The photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the cultural exchange between the British colonial rulers and the local population during the late 19th century. The image is a testament to the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Sri Lanka, showcasing the unique blend of European and Asian influences that characterized the colonial era. Despite the political and social complexities of the time, this photograph captures a moment of historical significance, offering a window into the past and a reminder of the enduring cultural connections that continue to shape Sri Lanka today.
