Landscape with Travelers, 1605. Creator: Jan Brueghel (Flemish, 1568-1625)
Landscape with Travelers, 1605. A son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Jan traveled in Italy in the 1590s and later enjoyed a successful career in Antwerp, where he eventually became court painter to the Hapsburg regents. As a painter, he specialized in floral still lifes and landscapes, sometimes collaborating with his friend Peter Paul Rubens. His drawings, however, are almost exclusively landscapes. Bruegel intended them to be sold as independent works, rather than as preparatory studies for paintings. The date indicated in the lower left corner of this sheet may be correct, but, along with the artists name it seems to have been added by a later hand

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "Landscape with Travelers, 1605" a masterpiece created by Jan Brueghel, a renowned Flemish artist from the late 16th and early 17th centuries. As the son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Jan inherited his father's talent and embarked on a journey to Italy in the 1590s, which greatly influenced his artistic style. Jan Brueghel found immense success in Antwerp and eventually became the court painter to the Hapsburg regents. While he was known for his exceptional floral still lifes and collaborations with Peter Paul Rubens, this particular artwork highlights his expertise in landscape painting. Unlike many artists of his time who used drawings as preparatory studies for their paintings, Brueghel intended these landscapes to be sold independently. The date inscribed in the lower left corner is believed to be accurate but was likely added later by another hand. In this stunning piece, executed using pen and brown ink along with brushwork and watercolor over stylus lines, Brueghel captures an enchanting scene that transports viewers into a serene countryside. The attention to detail is remarkable as every element harmoniously blends together - from rolling hills adorned with lush vegetation to travelers meandering through winding paths. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this exquisite print allows art enthusiasts worldwide to appreciate Jan Brueghel's artistic brilliance while immersing themselves in the beauty of nature captured during early 17th-century
