EDITORS COMMENTS
L'Apotheose du Soldat; le cérémonie du Pantheon: pendant le discours du Président (The Apotheosis of the Soldier; the Ceremony at the Pantheon: during the speech of the President of the Republic before the catafalque, 1920) is a poignant photograph capturing a significant moment in French history. The image, taken from "L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 2" published by L'Illustration in Paris in 1924, commemorates the arrival of the Unknown Soldier at the Pantheon in Paris. At the center of the photograph, four bundles of flags encircle the reliquary, which holds the heart of Leon Gambetta. To the left, at the base of the socle supporting the reliquary, lies the coffin of the Unknown Soldier. At the entrance of the right aisle, Alexandre Millerand stands on a small isolated tribune. This ceremony took place during the post-World War I era, a time of mourning and remembrance for the fallen soldiers. The Unknown Soldier's arrival at the Pantheon, a symbolic journey honoring the sacrifices made during the war, was a powerful moment in the peace process. The image captures the solemnity and gravity of the occasion, as President Raymond Poincaré delivers his speech, commemorating the fallen and paying tribute to their ultimate sacrifice. The photograph is a testament to the enduring power of symbols and the importance of remembering those who gave their lives for their country. The Unknown Soldier, whose identity remains unknown, represents the collective sacrifice of all the soldiers who fell during the war. The image is a powerful reminder of the human cost of war and the importance of peace.
