The late Colonel A. Strange, F.R.S. 1876. Creator: Unknown
The late Colonel A. Strange, F.R.S. 1876. Engraving from a photograph by Messrs. Maull and Co. Colonel Alexander Strange...did much very good service in the work of the trigonometrical survey in India...and latterly in superintending here, for the Indian Government, the construction of a series of large astronomical and geodetical instruments...These, together with smaller transit instruments, such as astronomical clocks, were designed by Colonel Strange and manufactured under his direction. For the purpose of testing the instruments to be used in India, he had a special observatory built, adjacent to the India Store Department in Belvedere-road, Lambeth, which was erected and fitted up according to plans furnished by him, with entirely satisfactory results...The instruments which he sent to India have proved excellently well adapted to the work they were required to perform'. EDITORS COMMENTS
great photograph of The late Colonel A. Strange, F.R.S. (Fellow of the Royal Society), taken in 1876. The image is an engraving from an original photograph by Messrs. Maull and Co. Colonel Alexander Strange was a distinguished figure in the field of trigonometrical survey and astronomy. He rendered significant service to the Indian government in this capacity, and later superintended the construction of a series of large astronomical and geodetic instruments for the Indian Government. These instruments, along with smaller transit instruments such as astronomical clocks, were designed by Colonel Strange himself and manufactured under his direction. To test the instruments before they were sent to India, Colonel Strange had a special observatory built adjacent to the India Store Department in Belvedere-road, Lambeth. The observatory was erected and fitted up according to his plans, with entirely satisfactory results. The instruments that were sent to India have proven to be excellently well adapted to the work they were required to perform. Colonel Strange's contributions to the trigonometrical survey and astronomy in India were highly regarded in his time. His dedication and expertise led to the successful implementation of advanced instruments for scientific research and exploration in India. This photograph is a testament to his achievements and legacy in the field.
