The late King of Wirtemberg, 1864. Creator: Unknown
The late King of Wirtemberg, 1864. Engraving of '...the deceased King of Wirtemberg, whose name was Frederick Charles, but who reigned by the title of William I...He deserves to be remembered as a just, faithful, and benevolent Prince, who ruled his small dominions in peace, and studied the welfare of his people, during the long period of forty-eight years. His death has caused a vacancy in the most noble Order of the Garter. In the present condition of Germany, it is probable that his son and successor, King Charles I., who is brother-in-law to the Russian Czar, will scarcely enjoy so tranquil and easy a reign'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print captures the late King of Wirtemberg, William I, in 1864. Engraved with intricate detail, this portrait showcases a man who was known for his just, faithful, and benevolent rule over his small dominions for an impressive forty-eight years. His death left a void in the prestigious Order of the Garter and marked the end of an era of peace and prosperity under his reign.
King William I's legacy as a beloved monarch is evident in this engraving, which portrays him with regal dignity and facial hair typical of the time period. The accompanying obituary from "Illustrated London News" paints a picture of a ruler who prioritized the welfare of his people above all else.
As Germany entered a new chapter following King William I's passing, it was uncertain whether his son and successor, King Charles I, would be able to maintain the same level of tranquility during his reign. This historical artifact serves as a reminder of a bygone era when kings were revered for their dedication to their subjects and their commitment to maintaining peace within their realms.
