The late Lord Wharncliffe, 1845. Creator: Unknown
The late Lord Wharncliffe, 1845. Portrait of British soldier and politician James Stuart-Wortley, 1st Baron Wharncliffe. He served as M.P. for the rotten borough Bossiney, in Cornwall, and in 1834 was appointed Lord Privy Seal. The distinguished earthly career of Lord Wharncliffe was rather suddenly brought to a termination. The noble Lord, who enjoyed a robust and vigorous old age, and who had, though seventy, all the appearance of middle life, was taken ill about a week before his death; early on Thursday he felt better, but later on that day he became insensible, and expired the following morning...The proximate cause of this fatal result was an effusion of blood or serum on the brain. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Late Lord Wharncliffe: A Life Cut Short". This print captures the essence of James Stuart-Wortley, 1st Baron Wharncliffe, a prominent British soldier and politician in the 19th century. Serving as an influential Member of Parliament for Bossiney, Cornwall, Lord Wharncliffe's political career reached its pinnacle when he was appointed Lord Privy Seal in 1834. Despite his robust appearance and seemingly eternal youthfulness at the age of seventy, tragedy struck suddenly. Just a week before his untimely demise, Lord Wharncliffe fell ill but showed signs of recovery on that fateful Thursday. However, hope quickly turned to despair as he slipped into unconsciousness later that day and passed away the following morning. The cause behind this tragic end was determined to be an effusion of blood or serum on the brain. This unexpected turn left a void in British politics and society alike. In this engraving from "Illustrated London News" dated back to 1845, we see Lord Wharncliffe portrayed with dignity and grace—a testament to his esteemed status within British society. The unknown creator has skillfully captured both his military background and political prowess through this striking portrait. As we reflect upon this photograph today, it serves as a reminder that even those who appear invincible can be vulnerable to life's unpredictable twists. May Lord Wharncliffe's memory endure as a symbol of resilience amidst adversity.
