The late Mr. H. Gastineau, 1876. Creator: Unknown
The late Mr. H. Gastineau, 1876. This venerable gentleman...was a water-colour artist of no mean pretensions, and laboured to the last in his profession, of which he was devotedly fond. He exhibited and sold not less than eleven pictures in the 1875 Exhibition of the Old Society of Painters in Water Colours. In early life he was apprenticed to an engraver; but, after emancipating himself from that trade, he took to painting, first in oils, and subsequently in water colours. A reference to the catalogues of the Old Society shows that he first exhibited in their gallery in the year 1818...At his decease he had been connected with the society fifty-eight years, being the last surviving of the old members...Mr. Gastineau has left...an unmarried daughter, Miss Maria Gastineau, who inherits her father's love of art, and is herself a member of the Ladies Society of Painters in Water Colours. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, we behold the late Mr. H. Gastineau, a distinguished watercolor artist whose passion for his craft spanned over six decades. Born in an era when art was a labor of love, Mr. Gastineau's dedication to his craft was unwavering until the very end. He displayed and sold an impressive eleven works in the 1875 Exhibition of the Old Society of Painters in Water Colours, a testament to his talent and commitment. Mr. Gastineau's artistic journey began in his youth when he was apprenticed to an engraver. However, his heart lay not in the intricacies of engraving but in the vibrant world of painting. He first showcased his watercolor creations in the Old Society's gallery in 1818, marking the beginning of a long and fruitful association that lasted an astonishing fifty-eight years. Mr. Gastineau was the last surviving member of the old guard, a living link to a bygone artistic era. At the twilight of his life, Mr. Gastineau left behind an unmarried daughter, Miss Maria Gastineau, who carried on her father's legacy. Like her father, she was deeply enamored of the arts and was an esteemed member of the Ladies' Society of Painters in Water Colours. The photograph captures not only the essence of a remarkable artist but also the continuity of a rich artistic heritage that was passed down through the generations. Mr. Gastineau's life and work serve as a poignant reminder of the power of art to inspire and endure.
