The late Mr. Jonas Webb, 1862. Creator: Unknown
The late Mr. Jonas Webb, 1862. English farmer and livestock breeder. The fine athletic form and the pleasant face and greeting marked the man and his character at once. He had long since won his position, and, having done so, he liked better to look on than to take any very active part in public. His chairmanships of companies entailed some duties upon him; but if he had a noisy meeting to manage he let things and speakers go much their own way, and yet if he had to speak he would say five words, and to the point, where others were saying twenty beside it. In short, his fine common sense, inexhaustible luck, good management, and rare eye for form made him a man of mark in life among a very keensighted and hardheaded generation; and his kind heart and home sympathies were true to him in death. He was buried at Babraham, on Friday, in the same family vault which had received, only five days before, the remains of his wife, whose loss had quite broken his heart...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of the late Mr. Jonas Webb, a prominent English farmer and livestock breeder from 1862. Despite being taken over a century ago by an unknown creator, the image exudes a sense of strength and character that defined Mr. Webb's life.
Described as having a "fine athletic form" and a "pleasant face," Mr. Webb was known for his quiet yet commanding presence in both public and private settings. His keen eye for form, good management skills, and rare common sense set him apart in a generation known for its sharpness and practicality.
Although he held important positions as chairman of various companies, Mr. Webb preferred to observe rather than actively participate in noisy meetings. When he did speak, his words were few but always to the point—a testament to his wisdom and efficiency.
Tragically, Mr. Webb's life was marked by personal loss with the passing of his wife just days before his own death. Despite this heartbreak, his kind heart and home sympathies remained true until the end.
This print serves as a poignant reminder of a man who left an indelible mark on those around him through his integrity, leadership, and unwavering dedication to both work and family.
