EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white portrait depicts the late George Wombwell, a British menagerist and showman who lived during the 19th century. Known for founding Wombwell's Travelling Menagerie, Wombwell was a pioneer in providing entertainment long before the establishment of Zoological Societies. His fascination with the natural world began at the London Docks, where he first encountered boa constrictors, the first to be imported into England. Seizing the opportunity, Wombwell offered £75 for a pair and became a regular showman. With great success, Wombwell subsequently exhibited his boa constrictors in Piccadilly, attracting large crowds. His ventures into the world of wild animals proved fruitful, and he became renowned for his ability to breed and care for a diverse range of species. At the time of his death, Wombwell boasted an unrivaled collection of over twenty lions and five elephants, in addition to a multitude of other exotic animals. This engraved portrait, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, captures the essence of a man who dedicated his life to the exploration and exhibition of the natural world. Wombwell's passion for animals and his skill as a showman left an indelible mark on Victorian society, making him a figure of intrigue and admiration.
