The late Queen of the Belgians, from a drawing by M. Baugniet, 1850. Portrait of Louise of Orleans who died of phthisis, On the night of the 9th [October] her Majesty had a few hours of rest; but at six o'clock next morning a crisis ensued, in consequence of which her Majesty fell into a state of general and fatal prostration. After a short time, however, she rallied, and regained sufficient strength to converse with her Confessor. Although exhausted to the last degree, she retained possession of all her mental faculties...she received the Communion and the Extreme Unction. She met her fate with heroic resignation; and, though a prey to the most excruciating pain, her strength of mind prevailed so far that she could console her deeply-afflicted husband...and, just before expiring, she affectionately kissed the hand of her Royal Consort which grasped her own until life was no more'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant image captures the final moments of the Late Queen of the Belgians, Princess Louise Marie Elisabeth of France, also known as Louise of Orleans. The drawing, created by M. Baugniet in 1850, was published in the Illustrated London News following the Queen's tragic death on October 19, 1850, at the age of 39. Louise, the beloved wife of King Leopold I of Belgium, succumbed to phthisis, a term used at the time to describe tuberculosis. The night before her death, she experienced a brief respite from her suffering, but the following morning, a crisis ensued, leaving her in a state of fatal prostration. Despite her weakened condition, Louise's mental faculties remained sharp. She received the sacraments of the Catholic Church and displayed remarkable strength of mind, consoling her husband and expressing her love for him before her final moments. The drawing beautifully encapsulates the Queen's dignity and resilience in the face of her suffering. Louise of Orleans' passing was deeply mourned by her subjects and the European royal family, and her legacy as a devoted wife and mother endured. This poignant image serves as a testament to her unwavering spirit and the profound impact she had on those around her.
