EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment of the grand launch of H.M. Gun-Boat "The Hardy" at the Albion Dockyard of Messrs Charles Hill and Sons in Bristol, England, in 1856. The anticipation is palpable as the dockyard clock strikes four, signaling the start of the ceremony. A gun fires in salute, and the vessel's name, "The Hardy," is called out by Miss Stewart. The crowd erupts in cheers as the blocks are removed, and the gun-boat, measuring 106 feet in length, 22 feet in breadth, and 8 feet in depth, gracefully slides into the Avon River. With a tonnage of 233 and a draught of water of 6 ft. 6 in., "The Hardy" is a formidable vessel, powered by the collective might of sixty horses' worth of engines from Maudslay, Sons, and Field of London.
