Launch of Her Majesty's armour-plated screw-frigate Caledonia, 31 guns, at Woolwich... 1862. Creator: Unknown

Launch of Her Majesty's armour-plated screw-frigate Caledonia, 31 guns, at Woolwich, [London], 1862....the vessel having been named by Miss Nicolson, daughter of the Commodore Superintendent, powerful jackscrews were applied to the keel, and the noble vessel glided down the launching-ways, and swung out into the centre of the river [Thames] amidst the cheers of the spectators, the bands performing "Rule Britannia"...The Caledonia was laid down about three years since as a 90-gun timber-frigate, hut, the Admiralty having abandoned the building of such vessels, she was altered and reconstructed as an armour-plated ship under the direction of Mr. Turner, master shipwright, who introduced several improvements in the construction of her frame, which is more than usually, solid and substantial, and fully capable of sustaining the immense weight of iron which will be on her sides. The contractor for the supply of her 4½in. wrought-iron plates is Mr. Brown, of Sheffield, and the most complete machinery, consisting of hydraulic-presses, planing and drilling machines, has been fitted up in a shed erected close to the dock where the vessel remains'. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from 1862, the launch of Her Majesty's armour-plated screw-frigate Caledonia, with an impressive armament of 31 guns, unfolds at Woolwich, London. The vessel, which had been named by Miss Nicolson, the daughter of the Commodore Superintendent, was brought to life as powerful jackscrews were applied to the keel. The crowd watched in awe as the noble ship glided down the launching-ways and swung out into the center of the River Thames, eliciting cheers from the spectators. The Caledonia had been laid down approximately three years prior as a 90-gun timber-frigate, but due to the Admiralty's abandonment of such vessels, she underwent a significant transformation under the direction of Mr. Turner, the master shipwright. Mr. Turner introduced several improvements to the vessel's frame, making it more solid and substantial than usual, capable of withstanding the immense weight of iron that would soon be affixed to her sides. The contractor responsible for supplying the 4½-inch wrought-iron plates was none other than Mr. Brown of Sheffield. An impressive array of machinery, including hydraulic-presses, planing, and drilling machines, had been installed in a shed nearby to facilitate the construction of the vessel. The Caledonia, a testament to the ingenuity and technological advancements of the era, remained in the dock, poised for further development and preparation for her future naval duties.
