Lawrence of Arabia, early 20th century
Lawrence of Arabia, early 20th century. Thomas Edward Lawrence, (1888-1935), most famously known as Lawrence of Arabia, gained international renown for his role as a British liaison officer during the Arab Revolt of 1916 to 1918. His very public image was in some part the result of U.S. traveller and journalist Lowell Thomass sensationalised reportage of the Revolt, as well as Lawrences autobiographical account, Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Many Arabs consider him a folk hero for promoting their cause for freedom from both Ottoman and European rule; likewise, many Britons count him among their countrys greatest war heroes. (Colourised black and white print)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enigmatic figure of Lawrence of Arabia, Thomas Edward Lawrence, during the early 20th century. Known for his pivotal role as a British liaison officer in the Arab Revolt from 1916 to 1918, Lawrence gained international fame and admiration. The image showcases him dressed in traditional Arabian robes, exuding an air of authority and resilience. Lawrence's significance goes beyond his military achievements; he became a symbol of hope for Arabs seeking freedom from both Ottoman and European rule. Regarded as a folk hero by many Arabs, he dedicated himself to their cause and fought alongside them with unwavering determination. The public's perception of Lawrence was greatly influenced by Lowell Thomas' sensationalized reporting on the Arab Revolt and Lawrence's own autobiographical account titled "Seven Pillars of Wisdom".
