Lawrence Heyworth, Esq. M.P. for Derby, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Lawrence Heyworth, Esq. M.P. for Derby, 1850. Portrait from a photograph by Kilburn, of British merchant Lawrence Heyworth, of the firm Peter Heyworth & Sons, which produced goods for export to Spain and Portugal. Heyworth established a commission agency in Rio de Janeiro, and with his brothers set up a shipping and commission agency in Liverpool. He was one of the first to perceive the practicability and importance of railways, and was one of the earliest of their promoters, inducing his brother to join him in withdrawing his capital from commerce, and investing it in the iron ways. This he did, not only on the ground of profit, but of national advantage'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white portrait depicts Lawrence Heyworth, Esq. M.P. for Derby, in the year 1850. The photograph was taken by the renowned British photographer, William Edward Kilburn. Lawrence Heyworth was a prominent figure in the business world of the 19th century, being the proprietor of Peter Heyworth & Sons, a successful firm that exported goods to Spain and Portugal. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish a commission agency in Rio de Janeiro, and in collaboration with his brothers, he set up a shipping and commission agency in Liverpool. Heyworth was an early advocate for the importance and practicability of railways, and was one of their earliest promoters. He persuaded his brother to invest their capital in the burgeoning railway industry, not only for financial gain but also for the national advantage. This visionary decision marked a significant turning point in the transportation sector, paving the way for the widespread adoption of railways and revolutionizing the way goods were transported across the country. This portrait was originally published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, providing a glimpse into the life and achievements of this remarkable British businessman and politician. Heyworth's story is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the Victorian era, a time when individuals like him shaped the future of their nation through innovation and enterprise.
