The Layette, or Outfit for the Imperial Infant, 1856. Creator: Unknown
The Layette, or Outfit for the Imperial Infant, 1856. Paris: view of...the Show-rooms of Mademoiselle Felicie, in the Rue Vivienne, where the layette...was on view...all the tables along the sides, as well as an exceedingly broad one down the centre, were completely covered with the most beautiful articles of lace, embroidery, silk, satin, and cambric that perhaps were ever collected together for any one child. Of dresses alone there were no less than twelve dozen. All were embroidered with such rare perfection as to rank as works of art, and the vast quantity of point d'Alencon [Alencon lace] with which they were trimmed must have been of immense value. Along the tables are also to be seen babies caps, hats, and head-dresses in such abundance as to excite one's wonder, and of these also twelve dozen were prepared-all beautifully embroidered, and all trimmed with the most costly lace'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a glimpse into the opulence and elegance of the 19th century, specifically the Layette, or Outfit for the Imperial Infant, displayed at Mademoiselle Felicie's showrooms in Paris in 1856. The scene unfolds in the Rue Vivienne, where the layette, a collection of exquisite clothing items for a royal infant, was on public display. The tables, adorned with the most beautiful articles of lace, embroidery, silk, satin, and cambric, were a feast for the eyes. The vast quantity of Alencon lace, a type of fine, openwork lace originating from Alencon, France, adorned each piece, adding to the immense value of the collection. Twelve dozen dresses, each embroidered with such rare perfection that they could be considered works of art, were displayed. The tables were also filled with an abundance of babies' caps, hats, and head-dresses, with twelve dozen prepared for the occasion, all beautifully embroidered and trimmed with the most costly lace. The Layette was a spectacle of wealth and luxury, a testament to the extravagance and attention to detail given to the clothing of the imperial infants of the time. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to an era of grandeur and opulence.
