Laying of the Atlantic Telegraph Cable: receiving messages from the Great Eastern...Valencia, 1865. Creator: Unknown
Laying of the Atlantic Telegraph Cable: receiving messages from the Great Eastern in the instrument-room of the Telegraph House at Foilhommerum, Valencia, 1865. Engraving from a sketch by Robert Dudley showing '...the reception of the telegrams, and the interior of the instrument-room at the station, which will, in fact, remain in a similar state until the whole ocean cable is successfully laid, when the line will be handed over by the Construction and Maintenance Company to the Atlantic Telegraph Company, and the instruments (Professor Thomson's) now used, and which are correctly shown in our present Engraving, will be taken away and a different description of instrument made use of for the general purposes of transmission of messages. It was nearly twelve o'clock at night when a message was received by Mr. Glass that the Caroline had laid the whole of the shore-end cable with perfect success, and that its electric continuity was quite perfect'. A Historic Moment in Communication - Laying of the Atlantic Telegraph Cable
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this remarkable engraving, dated Valencia, Spain, August 18th, 1865, we witness a pivotal moment in human history - the laying of the first transatlantic telegraph cable. The Great Eastern steamship has successfully laid down its oceanic counterpart at Foilhommerum station near Valencia. As news begins to trickle in from this monumental endeavor, officials gather around Professor Thomson's instruments within the Telegraph House.
The room is abuzz with excitement as messages start arriving via Morse code, transmitted through a series of electrical impulses that traverse thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean. The atmosphere is charged with anticipation and accomplishment - for it was just hours prior when Mr. Glass received word from Captain James' Caroline vessel about its successful laying of the shore-end cable.
This photograph print captures an extraordinary moment in time, as humanity takes a giant leap forward in global communication. It marks not only a technological triumph but also a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance. The Illustrated London News proudly published this engraving for all to marvel at - a true milestone in the annals of history.
