Laying the foundation-stone of the Albert Harbour, Greenock, 1862. Creator: Unknown
Laying the foundation-stone of the Albert Harbour, Greenock, [Scotland], 1862. Engraving from a sketch by Mr. Andrew Swan. In consequence of the great increase of business at Greenock it has been resolved to enlarge the harbour accommodation at that port. [The laying of the foundation stone]...was attended with the most brilliant success, the procession being the largest and most imposing which had ever passed along the streets of Greenock...The Past Grand Treasurer (Melville) deposited a bottle containing the various coins of the realm of gold, silver, and copper, from a sovereign to the eighth part of a penny, local journals of the day, and wine, oil, and corn...cement was then applied which the Past Grand Master smoothed in a tradesman-like way with an elegant silver trowel, procured by the engineers for the purpose...the Grand Master finished the work by three mystical knocks with the golden mallet. Hearty cheers were then given by the thousands within sight of the ceremony...The Provost, Mr. James Johnston Grieve, having addressed the vast multitude amidst great cheering, a salvo of eighteen guns was fired from a battery on the Albert-quay; and the singing of the National Anthem ended the proceedings'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the momentous occasion of laying the foundation stone of Albert Harbour in Greenock, Scotland, in 1862. The scene is filled with a sense of grandeur and excitement as the community comes together to celebrate this important milestone. The event was a result of the significant growth in business activity at Greenock, leading to the decision to expand the harbour accommodation. The procession leading up to the ceremony was described as the largest and most imposing in the history of Greenock, with a multitude of people lining the streets to witness the event. The Past Grand Treasurer, Melville, played a crucial role in the ceremony, depositing a bottle containing various coins, local journals, and other items into the foundation. The cement was then applied, and the Past Grand Master smoothed it in with a silver trowel. The Grand Master finished the process with three mystical knocks using a golden mallet. The crowd erupted into hearty cheers as the Provost, Mr. James Johnston Grieve, addressed them. The festivities concluded with a salvo of eighteen guns fired from a battery on the Albert-quay and the singing of the National Anthem. This engraving from a sketch by Andrew Swan, published in the Illustrated London News in 1862, captures the essence of this historic moment and the community's pride in their thriving port.
