EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the laying of the foundation stone of Victoria College in Jersey, an event that took place in 1850 to commemorate the visit of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert to the island in 1846. The site of the ceremony was adorned with several tall poles topped with enormous flags, creating an impressive and patriotic scene. The Bailiff, Sir Thomas Le Breton, played a significant role in the ceremony. He was responsible for depositing a lead box into the under foundation stone, which contained copies of the States' Acts, various coins of the present reign, Jersey pence, halfpence, and farthings, as well as a copper-plate inscribed with the details of the day's ceremony. Following the Bailiff's contribution, General Sir James Henry Reynett, K.C.H., the Lieutenant-Governor and Commander of the Forces of the island, laid the stone with due form. In his address to the Bailiff and Gentlemen of the States, he congratulated them on the event. The Dean then solemnly blessed the work, invoking the blessings of Christianity upon the new educational institution. The crowd of men, dressed in Victorian attire, gathered around the site, watching the ceremony unfold with great interest. A pulley and winch were used to lift the stone into place, symbolizing the collective effort and determination to bring the project to fruition. This print, from the Illustrated London News, captures the essence of the occasion, providing a glimpse into the past and the significance of this educational milestone in the history of Jersey.
