Leaf from the Hours of Duke Louis of Savoy: Saints Nereus and Achilleus, mid-1400s
Leaf from the Hours of Duke Louis of Savoy: Saints Nereus and Achilleus, mid-1400s. Once illustrating a book of hours made for Louis, Duke of Savoy and Prince of Piedmont (1413-65), this miniature depicts two Roman martyrs of the early church, Nereus and Achilleus. Their feast day was jointly honored on May 12 suggesting this illustration comes from the Suffrages. The remainder of this book of hours is currently preserved in the Bibliotheque nationale in Paris. Louis is noted in history for receiving the famous Shroud of Turin from Margaret de Charny in 1453. The shroud was held by the House of Savoy before being bequeathed to the Holy See in 1983

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a leaf from the Hours of Duke Louis of Savoy, specifically depicting Saints Nereus and Achilleus. Created in the mid-1400s, this miniature was originally part of a book of hours commissioned for Louis, Duke of Savoy and Prince of Piedmont. The exquisite detail and vibrant colors bring these Roman martyrs to life on the page. Nereus and Achilleus were early Christian saints whose feast day fell on May 12th. This particular illustration is believed to be from the Suffrages section of the book. Interestingly, while this leaf is now housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, the rest of the book can be found in Paris' Bibliotheque nationale. Duke Louis himself played an intriguing role in history as he received one of Christianity's most revered relics - the Shroud of Turin - from Margaret de Charny in 1453. This sacred artifact remained with his family, known as the House of Savoy until it was eventually bequeathed to the Holy See in 1983. The combination of tempera and gold on vellum gives this artwork a rich texture that adds depth to its beauty. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from France's heritage art collection, we are transported back centuries to witness these holy figures immortalized through skilled craftsmanship.
