Les Soirees de Rome: LArc de triomphe, 1763-1764. Creator: Hubert Robert (French, 1733-1808)

Les Soirees de Rome: LArc de triomphe, 1763-1764. Derived from his own pen-and-ink drawings, this suite of etchings features fictional characters situated near recognizable buildings and statues in Rome. On the title page, Robert dedicated the suite to Marguerite Le Compte, who visited Rome in 1764 in the company of the wealthy author and art enthusiast Claude Henri Watelet. Both Le Compte and Watelet were amateur etchers, and they socialized with a group that included artists and printmakers centered at the academies in Italy. Roberts dedication was likely motivated by the hope of future patronage from Le Compte. She may be the generous woman with a hand muff depicted in The Ancient Temple, the fifth scene in this series

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a stunning piece of art titled "Les Soirees de Rome: LArc de triomphe" created by the talented French artist Hubert Robert in 1763-1764. Derived from his own pen-and-ink drawings, this suite of etchings showcases fictional characters placed amidst iconic buildings and statues in Rome. The dedication on the title page reveals that Robert dedicated this series to Marguerite Le Compte, who visited Rome in 1764 alongside Claude Henri Watelet, a wealthy author and art enthusiast. Both Le Compte and Watelet were amateur etchers themselves and were part of a social circle that included artists and printmakers associated with Italian academies. It is believed that Robert's dedication was driven by the hope of securing future patronage from Le Compte. In one scene from this series titled "The Ancient Temple" we can see a depiction of what may be Le Compte herself - an elegant woman adorned with a hand muff, exuding generosity. Hubert Robert's work reflects his mastery as an artist while also revealing his strategic approach to cultivating relationships within influential circles. This particular print allows us to appreciate not only the artistic brilliance but also the intricate stories behind its creation. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, it stands as a testament to both historical significance and artistic excellence.
