EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of upheaval and determination during the Russian Revolution of 1917. The image, titled "Les Soubresauts de la Russie; Un bureau de recrutement pour engages volontaires" (The Uproars in Russia: A Recruiting Office for Volunteers), was taken in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg, Russia) during the summer of 1917. As the regular Russian army was disintegrating, young men aged 16 to 17, inspired by a sense of patriotism and duty, came to enlist in the special battalions known as the "Bataillons de la Mort" (Battalions of Death). The recruits are seen in this photograph, seated at a desk in a makeshift recruiting office, signing up to join the military and give their elders an example of courage and commitment. The photograph, published in "L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 2" by L'Illustration, Paris, 1924, offers a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by young people during a time of great political and social upheaval. The photograph is a powerful testament to the human spirit and the resilience of those who answered the call to serve their country during the First World War.
