Letter from Sir Thomas More to Henry VIII, 5th March 1534. Artist: Sir Thomas More

Letter from Sir Thomas More to Henry VIII, 5th March 1534. Letter written from Chelchith (Chelsea), by Sir Thomas More to King Henry VIII, reminding him of his promise of favour made when he resigned the Chancellorship, praying him not to distrust his truth and devotion, and declaring that, in the matter of Elizabeth Barton, the Maid of Kent, he had written the truth to Cromwell; if the king deems him guilty, he is ready to forfeit life and fortune, but if the king perceives that he has only acted faithfully, he begs that he may be relieved from the bill brought into Parliament against him. From the fourth series of Facsimiles of royal, historical, literary and other autographs in the Department of Manuscripts, British Museum: Series I - V, (London, 1899)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant historical artifact - a letter from Sir Thomas More to King Henry VIII, dated 5th March 1534. The artist, Sir Thomas More himself, penned this letter from Chelchith (Chelsea) as a reminder to the king of his promise of favor when he resigned the Chancellorship. In this heartfelt correspondence, More pleads with Henry not to doubt his loyalty and devotion. The content of the letter also touches upon an intriguing episode involving Elizabeth Barton, known as the Maid of Kent. More asserts that he has written the truth about her to Cromwell and offers to forfeit his life and fortune if found guilty by the king. However, if Henry recognizes his faithful actions, he implores him to withdraw the bill brought against him in Parliament. Displayed in vibrant color and showcasing intricate handwriting characteristic of its time period, this facsimile provides us with a glimpse into Tudor-era communication and politics. It is an embodiment of religious fervor intertwined with political power struggles during the sixteenth century. As we admire this remarkable piece created by both monarchs - King Henry VIII and Sir Thomas More - we are reminded of their complex relationship: one marked by admiration turned sour due to conflicting beliefs. This print serves as a testament to their shared history while shedding light on themes such as faithfulness, truthfulness, martyrdom, and royal authority that continue to resonate today.
