EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Lieutenant Theodore G. Ellyson of the United States Navy is seen testing a seaplane on the Potomac River in 1911. Ellyson, who was the first U.S. Navy officer to be designated as an aviator (Navy Aviator No. 1), played a significant role in the experimental development of aviation in the early 20th century. The image, captured by renowned photography studio Harris & Ewing, depicts Ellyson confidently standing on the wing of the biplane, wearing a leather helmet and goggles, as he tests the seaplane's stability and control. The seaplane, with its large wings and floats, is anchored to the riverbed with "spuds" or long poles, allowing it to remain stationary while being tested. Ellyson's pioneering work in naval aviation was recognized with the Navy Cross for his antisubmarine service during World War I. However, his aviation career tragically ended in 1928 when his aircraft crashed over the Chesapeake Bay, taking his life. This photograph is a testament to the spirit of innovation and exploration that characterized the early days of aviation. The image, which is part of the Harris & Ewing Collection at the Library of Congress, captures the essence of a pivotal moment in American history, as the country embraced the possibilities of flight and the potential it held for naval warfare. The photograph also provides a glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the lives of the pioneering men and women who helped shape the future of aviation and transportation. From the glass negatives of the Harris & Ewing Collection, this image continues to inspire and captivate audiences, reminding us of the incredible progress that has been made in just over a century.
