Lillie and Dr. Levick Sorting a Trawl Catch, c1910– 1913, (1913). Biologist Dennis G Lillie and medical officer G. Murray Levick. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intense dedication and scientific pursuits of biologist Dennis G Lillie and medical officer G. Murray Levick during the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Taken between 1910 and 1913 by renowned photographer Herbert Ponting, this image showcases Lillie and Dr. Levick diligently sorting through a trawl catch. The Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), aimed to continue the important scientific work initiated by Scott on his previous voyage to Antarctica in 1901-04. With a diverse team that included experts in various fields such as geology, zoology, surgery, photography, engineering, skiing, meteorology, and physics among others; their goal was not only reaching the South Pole but also advancing our understanding of this remote region. Unfortunately for Scott's team, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912 they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already beaten them there by a month. Tragically delayed by blizzards and facing dwindling supplies on their return journey from the pole; Scott along with Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans perished at the end of March. Their bodies were found eight months later alongside poignant diaries documenting their heroic struggle against nature's forces. This remarkable photograph is part of "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume I published in London in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , providing an enduring testament to these brave explorers' unwavering commitment to science even under extreme circumstances.
