EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Tulare County, California. Living conditions of migrant agricultural workers on whom the crops of California depend," was captured by renowned American photographer Dorothea Lange in the 1930s during the Great Depression. The image depicts a desolate scene of makeshift housing for migrant agricultural workers in a Hooverville, or shantytown, located in the rural countryside of California. The workers, who were traveling from place to place in search of employment, lived in these rudimentary structures made from discarded materials such as barrels, wood, and tin. The image shows several barrels stacked together to form the walls of the shanties, with a chimney and flue poking out from one of them. Smoke billows from the chimney, indicating that a fire is burning inside, likely for heating or cooking purposes. The living conditions of these migrant workers were a stark contrast to the opulence of the agricultural industry that they helped sustain. The image is a poignant reminder of the economic disparities that existed during the Great Depression and the challenging living conditions faced by many Americans during that time. Lange, who worked for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) and later the Office of War Information (OWI), was known for her documentation of the human impact of the Great Depression. Her photographs, including this one, are an important part of the historical record of this period and provide valuable insights into the social and economic realities of the time.
