Locomotive Steam-carriage for common roads, built for the Earl of Caithness, 1860. Creator: Unknown

Locomotive Steam-carriage for common roads, built for the Earl of Caithness, 1860....a steam-carriage...with which his Lordship, accompanied by Lady Caithness, the Rev, W. Ross, and Mr. Rickett, "travelled north; " in fact, drove from Inverness to Barrogell Castle, a distance of 150 miles, virtually in two days, and which is considered the boldest and most difficult enterprise recorded in the annals of road locomotion...on those parts of the road where some distance forward could be seen, he attained a speed of eighteen miles an hour...on stopping for water, egress from the carriage was almost impossible from the crowd of Gaelic fishermen assembled...These carriages are designed by Mr. Rickett to carry three persons at ten miles per hour on any ordinary roads...They require about the same space as a horse and chaise, carry sufficient water for ten to fifteen miles, and coal for thirty miles, weigh thirty cwt. and are well mounted on springs, the only noise being that of the escaping steam, which can be stopped instantly when horses appear frightened...In the Engraving the splashers are taken off the wheels in order to show the machinery, which when working is protected from dust and dirt'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a historic steam-carriage built for the Earl of Caithness in 1860. The steam-carriage, an engineering marvel of its time, was designed by Mr. Rickett and is believed to be the boldest and most daring record of road locomotion in the annals of those parts. The Earl, accompanied by Lady Caithness, the Reverend W. Ross, and Mr. Rickett himself, embarked on a journey from Inverness to Barrogell Castle, covering a distance of 150 miles in nearly two days. On favorable stretches of the road, where a clear view of the path ahead was possible, the steam-carriage reached an impressive speed of eighteen miles per hour. The engraving depicts the steam-carriage designed to accommodate three individuals, traveling at a steady ten miles per hour on any ordinary roads. These carriages required the same road space as a horse and chaise, carried enough water for ten to fifteen miles and coal for thirty miles, weighed thirty cwt., and were mounted on springs. The only audible noise came from the escaping steam, which could be instantly silenced when horses were present. In the photograph, the splashers have been removed from the wheels to reveal the intricate machinery beneath. When in operation, the machinery was shielded from dust and dirt, making for a smoother and more efficient journey. This steam-carriage, a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of the Victorian era, continues to fascinate us with its audacious spirit and engineering prowess.
