London improvements - New Coventry Street, 1845. Creator: Unknown
London improvements - New Coventry Street, 1845. New Coventry-street...consists, on one side, of a pile of highly embellished houses, from the designs of Mr. Charles Mayhew. The upper portion is profusely embellished in a sort of cinque-cento taste, and the effect is certainly imposing. The width of the street is 60 feet...We understand that the Improvement Commissioners intend to continue this line...thus opening a noble avenue long wanted from the north to the south side of London...The plans will be carried out by Mr. Barry, the celebrated architect, and, combined with the new streets, north and south, east and west...will indeed be a boon to the public, as well as a vast advantage to the metropolis in a healthful as well as a moral point of view. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the London improvements taking place on New Coventry Street in 1845. The creator of this remarkable image remains unknown, but their work beautifully showcases the architectural transformation happening during that time. Designed by Mr. Charles Mayhew, the highly embellished houses lining one side of New Coventry Street are a sight to behold. The upper portion of these buildings is adorned with intricate details in a cinque-cento style, creating an imposing and grand effect. With a width of 60 feet, New Coventry Street was just the beginning of a larger plan by the Improvement Commissioners to create a noble avenue connecting the north and south sides of London. Renowned architect Mr. Barry has been entrusted with carrying out these plans, which also include new streets extending east and west. This ambitious project promises not only to benefit the public but also enhance both health and morality within the metropolis. The engraving from "Illustrated London News" provides us with a glimpse into this significant period in British history. It transports us back to Victorian England when town planning was at its peak, shaping cities for generations to come. As we admire this print today, we can appreciate how these improvements have stood the test of time and continue to contribute to London's rich architectural heritage.
